Math

We use a math program by Pearson called Investigations. It is a great program but very language based. The goals are often to have the students recall how they got their answers and to use what they know to get a new answer.
For example, if a student knows that 2+2=4, and they know that 5 is one more than 4, they can now figure out that 2+3=5.

I encourage your child to practice what we are working on in class on the Pearson Website. As we finish each unit, i will assign games and tests to do at home, on the computer, so you can see how they are doing and what they are working on.

A new goal for the district, across the grades, is for students to know their math facts quickly. For 1st grade, students need to know their facts to and from 10 (+, -) and be able to correctly complete 20 problems (10 of each) in 2 minutes by the end of the school year.
We will be working on this in the classroom and I encourage you to work on this at home as well. Flash cards and memory cards can easily be made on index cards. You can even use a deck of playing cards and have your child pick 2 cards and add them together. This is best for the beginning since it has the pictures for them to add. The goal in the end is to not have to use any tools.
